I am 4 months pregnant and cannot afford to buy any maternity clothing-my husband just doesn't see a need for it and he controls all the money. Does anyone know of a way if there is one I can alter my existing pants? I have a string tied around the button and the button hole to keep them on but this is so painful. Any ideas?
No offense, but your husband sounds like an idiot.
You need a good bra. You can get a nursing one and wear it now, but you NEED a good bra. And if you're nursing, you'll need a bunch of good bras because they'll be sweaty and milky and a total mess a lot of the early time.
You will also need at least a few maternity shirts and a few pairs of pants. There is NO WAY I could have made it throughout my pregnancies in my non-maternity clothes.
You could try a Bella Band. It's a variation on the rubberband through the buttonhole trick, but a lot more comfy and way better looking. (It's basically a giant elastic waistband that holds up your unbuttoned pants.)
You can also go on FreeCycle for your city and see if anyone's giving away maternity clothes. Here in St. Paul, MN, I see stuff like that posted every day. Or Goodwill always has a few things…

I used to love my job, but I just had my baby in June, and I feel awful going back to work (I have two more weeks of maternity leave left). My mom will be taking care of my baby boy while I am at work, so at least I don't need to worry about leaving him with a stranger. Unfortunatelly, staying at home longer is not an option for me. I feel guilty, sad, and I cry every day. How can I make it easier both for my baby and for myself?
Take baby steps… Have you let your Mum look after bubs when you are not around yet? if not do it now, just an hour one day, a couple of hours another day and so on, so you can both get used to being apart (go shopping always a good pick me up although you'll find yourself buying something for bubs). Leave 1/2 hour before you need to on your first day so you can have a big cry and still be able to pull yourself together before you go to work. Once you get going you'll be amazed at how good it is to talk to others about adult stuff not just goo goo and gah gahs. It does get easier and I will pre-warn you that your baby will know whats going on and when you get home maybe a little standoffish at first but then will give you the best cuddles you've ever had. Goodluck.

I am planning to return to work (NHS) after my maternity leave finishes but am also thinking of starting my own buisness which i may be able to get off the ground before i am due to return to my employer.
Can i work self employed whilst receiving SMP? I live in the UK.
Anyone have any experience of this?
In Australia you are only restricted by your employment contract and only if it is in the same field as your job. You also have to declare all your income if you are on a pension and for tax purpses. I would assume the UK is very similar.
