I'm very early in my pregnancy. I'm in the military and have to do a fitness test this weekand which consists of situps, pushups, and a 2 mile run. Is it safe to partake in the fitness test while being pregnant?

If you have been physically active all along and excercise frequently (as in…you were working out a lot before pregnancy) and your DR says its ok you should be fine.

I've heard it's bad if you suddenly do a lot of exercise when you really haven't done it before.

You should be fine…but check with your DR first!

Good luck!

Does anyone else think that Yahoo!Answers should add another section under Pregnancy & Parenting for “Healthy Pregnancy” or “Fitness & Nutrition for Expecting Mothers”? I know I’d like to see a section specific to these topics.

Thanks!
Thanks! I've placed a suggestion with Yahoo!Answers. Hopefully we'll see a new category for those of us concerned with health, fitness and nutrition for expecting mothers.

It usually takes about 20 minutes of cardio (continuously) before your body actually starts to burn fat. If you want to see faster results, you should try to wake up before the baby and work out as long as you can before he wakes up. You can also try using him for strength training during your workout. He is probably about 20 lbs or so by now (maybe even more) so you can use him as a weight for you to do some exercises. You can either stand or lie down and hold him between your hands, and do a chest press with him. Depending on the angle you use it will target either your shoulders and biceps or your chest muscles. You can also hold him in front of you lying in your arms and roll him toward you in a bicep curl. Lie down on your back and sit him on your stomach, and do sit ups to kiss him and play with him. Hold him in your arms and do squats and lunges. All of these are very safe and fun ways to play with him and work out at the same time. Strength training will help you lose the weight faster, then you can focus on cardio or aerobics when he's sleeping. The more muscle you build up the faster your body will burn calories, which will help you burn the fat. Like other people have mentioned, your goals should be reaonable–no more than about 1-2 lbs per week. You can also try getting a child's bike seat and taking him on bike rides. I know it's hot, but with the bike moving a little faster than you can walking, the breeze might be enough to keep him a little cooler. The biking will help tone up your legs, too.

My husband and I joined a gym before we got pg. I want to keep using the membership since it's expensive, but my dr. told me not to lift any more than 20 pounds. I forgot to ask about heart rate. Can I do the treadmill/elliptical/ bike and really sweat, or do I have to keep myself at a lower heart rate now? I'm trying to gain no more than 15-20 pounds during my pregnancy since I'm starting out a little heavy. Thanks for any suggestions!

The March of Dimes is very clear - exercise! Unless your doc tells you otherwise, it will benefit you *and* your baby.

But you're right to take it easy. I do reps of a bunch of arm and upper body exercises with two 5-lb. weights (10 pounds total) and use the bike. I also walk, a lot.

They used to say that your heart rate should stay below 140. But that's been thrown out the window, as plenty of women have safely exercised at that intensity or higher. A lot of it depends on your pre-pregnancy habits.

Your best bet is to listen to your body and slow down if you feel out of breath or any other form of strain.

And realize that exercising can increase your caloric needs - which pregnancy already does! So keep an eye on what you're eating, too.

Congrats on the baby!
