HIgh mortality rates among women giving birth has become a major health issue in Afghanistan. More and more children are being left as orphans in the war-torn country. Let’s take a closer look.
STORY: In Afghanistan’s eastern town of Faizabad, six orphans are left in the care of their aunt, who feeds them rice and bread. The orphans’ mother bled to death while giving birth. It’s a common health issue that haunts women in the war-torn country. The aunt says her sister was unable to make it in time from her home to a hospital.
[Sharifa, Victim's Sister]:”My sister died while giving birth. These orphan kids do not have anyone to take care of them, I am their aunt and I have to come and take care of them. Sometimes I can’t help them, there is no one to take care of them. There is no clinic nearby, no cars, and no proper roads. When my sister was about to deliver a baby we could not take her to the hospital. She stayed at home for one day and one night, then she died.”
About 1,600 Afghan women die in childbirth out of every 100,000 births. In some of the most remote areas, the death rate is as high as 6,500.In comparison, the average rate in developing countries is 450 and in developed countries it’s 9. Hospitals are generally poorly equipped and medical help is inaccessible to those living in remote locations.
But Mahenow, a pregnant Afghan woman, still makes her way on a donkey which is guided by her husband, to a hospital in search for help.
[Mahenow, Pregnant Afghan Woman]: ”In the past there was no hospital, no doctor nor medicine here, that is why we were doing the delivery at home. Now we have clinics and good doctors so I decided to come to the clinic in order to become more aware of health issues.”
Afghan men prefer their women to consult only women doctors, but that is easier said than done in a society where there are few female doctors and nurses and little emphasis is placed on educating girls. The problem got worse during the Taliban regime, when girls were banned from going to schools.
Momina is a midwife student whose mother died while giving birth when she was just two years old.
[Momina Hinafy, Midwife Student]: ”The maternal mortality rate in Badakhshan was too high especially in the remote and mountainous districts, and my mother died while giving birth. That is why I took the detour to become a midwife and help mothers in order to save other mothers’ lives.”
It is an age old practice for Afghan women in rural areas to deliver babies at home. Trained midwives are rarely in attendance. If there are complications, it might take hours, even days to reach the nearest clinic.
