Hey ladies, I’m a mother of two studying to be a childbirth educator. Just out of curiosity, what were you favourite and least favourite aspects of your childbirth classes. Your advice will help me teach better classes for parents. Many thanks!
Personally, I loved most of it. The interaction with other pregnant couples, the information, etc. I also like that our instructors were also realistic about pain management options, and were very non judgmental, they covered it very factually. They didn’t try to influence you to go natural or to absolutely get an epidural.
I didn’t like the birth videos, as a first time mother (most are in childbirth classes) they scared the wits out of me. They should have shown some births with women who had epidurals too, to give a balanced view.
Good luck!!

what bothered me was the fact that while going over things that could go "wrong" the teacher had mentioned that if your water breaks, and you start bleeding then you need to imediatly call 911.
she neer explained what causes it or anything like that. she said it then just brushed it off and said "oh, dont worry it wont happen to any of you"
well guess what?? it did happen!!
my water broke, then i gushed blood. i freaked out and called 911 since i was home alone while my husband was at work.
i was rushed to the hospital, and thankfully heard the heart beat.
he was born 20 hrs. later by c-section.
so my advise to you would be, if your going to go over things, and make a comment like that, then make sure you throughly cover the potential causes, so you dont have someone freaking out when it happens.

I would have liked to be better prepared for post-partum. I did not realize that I would be in pain for six months after my son was born and I didn't know the signs of PPD. The classes did a great job at preparing us for l&d but it would have been great to learn to physical and emotional aspects of what would come next. And the breastfeeding class was great but it would have been better if we were told about some of the most common complications and how to solve them and not just the how-to of breastfeeding. And it would have been great to know that I wouldn't have a libido for 2 and a half years - Yikes!
Some issues are common enough to learn about before they happen.

i was bothered by the way you were made to feel guilty about getting epidural.
i knew that i wanted one - that i had the right to be as comfortable as possible during upcoming delivery. i only labored for only 4 hours pain free because of my choice to use it & i don't regret it at all.
i tell all my friends to get over the guilt and do what your comfortable with - i wish more childbirth classes did that: let you feel about being empowered about our birth choices.

I loved the fact it turns adults into shy 5 year olds. We did alot of mixed group activities, and often would need to stand infront of the class or speak up and say words like "anus" and "vagina" etc. It was rediculous. I was the youngest there (22 at time) and the only one willing to speak up.
Mixed group activites are good for bonding. Ensuring that there is a question time part of your lesson, and also allowing people to approach you privately after the lesson if they have something they would like to ask.
Be casual but informative. A real go getter.
