I know in Utah, the state code states that public breasfeeding, and showing he breast incidental to breastfeeding cannot be conisdered a lewd act. This makes breastfeeding protected in Utah.
What states are not yet as progressive as Utah as far as breastfeeding?
Thirty-nine states have laws with language specifically allowing women to breastfeed in any public or private location (Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and Wyoming)
I breastfed / am breastfeeding my kids and I did it just about everywhere and anywhere. Though by the time they were talking in sentences we pretty much confined it to before bed and nap time.

I breastfed both my children and I can't imagine doing such an act in public. Not for modesty's sake — but because my children needed a peaceful and quiet environment for nursing. I would have never exposed them to the noise, turmoil and germs of the public during nursing. That's nuts.
Of course, I also didn't believe in nursing children that were old enough talk in sentences and some women do that too. Some women on the "long term breastfeeding forum" were whining about having to wean their children because they were starting kindergarten in the fall. I think some women just enjoy this a little too much.

I'm surprised that there are any laws regarding feeding children in the way that nature intended. In Australia it's legal everywhere and is widely accepted as normal. Women were given breasts so that they can feed their young not as lewd objects that are only there for sexual entertainment.

in some states like, Texas, there are newer versions of these laws trying to make their way through the legislation.
In TX, there's a loop hole that private places can slip through. the law states:
A mother is entitled to breast-feed her baby in any location in which the mother is authorized to be.
but that's it. it only applies to public places… private businesses like stores and restaurants can kick you out for whatever reason - refuse service even for the reason of breastfeeding…. we're trying to change this to be more specific and say that "in any location public or private" and that "she must not be asked to move or leave for the reason of breastfeeding" and include some sort of thing about even if a small portion or large portion of her breast is exposed during the latching on/off part of nursing and stuff like that.
I'm not sure of the number of states… but that's mine!! It's happened too… many times and we end up in a public fight for an apology and policy change for that company.
